We did indeed have a great time. Martha tells me she was reluctant to go to
Sicily but was won over by the the history, geology, botany, archeology, and
natural beauty of the island. Fabio was great; we learned so much from him.
In addition to the planned itinerary, he took us to some other very
interesting places (Fondo Morte and Portopalo at the southeastern corner of
the island, Modica and Scicli in the vicinity of Ragusa). Also the city
guides, particularly Agatha in Taormina.
We have few suggestions. The bathroom at the hotel in Taormina smelled of
sewer gas, but the woman at the desk recommended a fabulous restaurant
(Vinieri Modi), where her boyfriend is the chef. We also had a fine dinner
in Taormina at a restaurant recommended by Agatha (Ristorante Nettuna da
Siciliano). The Ristorante Duomo in Ragusa was everything we’d hoped it
would be. In fact, we liked Ragusa and Modica both very much. You might
build those towns into your itinerary.
The wine tastings, especially the second, were pleasant, but for us, it was
more than a “light lunch” needed when we had more activity in the afternoon.
Thanks for all your help. We hope to return to Sicily to see the western
part of the island.
